BOX SCORE

LEBANON, Ill. – The McKendree Bearcats doused the Truman Bulldogs season with a 41-14 defeat in the regular season finale on Saturday.

The Bearcats (8-3; 6-2 GLVC) took advantage of every Truman misstep in handing the Bulldogs their first conference loss. McKendree stopped Truman on fourth and one at their own 26 then three plays later Percy Thompson ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run up the middle to put McKendree up 7-0.

McKendree would block the first of their three punts on the afternoon that eventually led to a 32-yard field goal by Steven O'Block with 1:18 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs quickly went three and out and McKendree put Truman's defense on their heels with their longest drive of the game, a 12-play, 78-yard march resulting in an eight-yard TD pass from Reece Metcalf to Sean Dowlling for a 17-0 lead.

Lawrence Woods tried to give the Bulldogs a shot in the arm. Woods took the ensuing kickoff straight up the sidelines 96 yards for the score and cut the McKendree lead to 17-7.

The two teams traded empty possessions before half but a second blocked punt by McKendree gave them the ball at the Truman 11. Shayeen Edwards took the next three handoffs and found his way into the endzone to extend the lead out to 24-7, which would be the halftime score.

The backbreaker came early in the third quarter. Brock Rohler's punt drove Derrick Curry back to his own 10 and the Bearcats broke out of a few tackles before outrunning the Truman punter to the pylon for a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown. McKendree would add a 20-yard field goal and a 19-yard TD pass to lead 41-7.

Joey Schenck nabbed a 12-yard TD pass from Jaden Barr to close the scoring with 7:55 left in the fourth.
'
Thompson finished with 131 yards on the ground for McKendree and was the first GLVC running back to go over 100 yards against the Bulldogs this season. The Bearcats finished with 192 yards overall on the ground and 350 yard of total offense.

Barr finished 23-of-33 for 197 yards and 18 rushes for 35 to lead Truman.

The loss allowed Southwest Baptist (Mo.) to earn a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference title with the Bulldogs. Truman won the season matchup with SBU but the conference recognizes co-champions as each had one league loss. It is the first conference title for Truman since 1988 and first shared GLVC title in conference history.
