RECAP: Bulldog Women Fall In Opener To Northern Michigan

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Truman Women's Basketball team fell 59-56 in their season opener to Northern Michigan on Saturday night as part of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday against #13 Grand Valley State at 3 p.m. (ET).
 
Truman led 24-20 at the break but the Wildcats exploded for a 28-point third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 50-36 following the first basket of the fourth.  Sloane Totta knocked down a triple to break a 30-all tie, however NMU would score 20 of the next 23 points.
 
The Bulldogs clawed their way back with a 9-0 run midway through the fourth to close the gap down to five at 52-47 with 5:22 left.
 
Erin Honkala broke the run with a basket at the 3:16 mark.
 
Later, Brook Bailey drained a three to make it a one-possession game with under a minute left. Bre Gaspervich knocked down both free throws with 14 seconds to push the lead back back to four.
 
Rachel Edmundson hit one of two free throws and on the rebound for the miss, the Bulldogs got the tie up and the possession arrow. Cassidy Clark scored to cut the deficit to two. Gaspervich was fouled in the backcourt, missed her first attempt but made the second. Totta raced up the court and heaved a half court shot that was just right of the target at the horn sounded.
 
Clark led all Truman scorers with 13 points coming on 5-of-13 shooting. Bailey was also in double figures with 11 and made three, three-pointers. The Bulldogs made five of 20 three-point attempts (25%) and were 21-of-62 overall from the floor (33.9%).
 
Darby Youngstrom paced the Wildcats with 15 points.  NMU started the game missing their first 10 shots but found their rythem in the second half going 15-of-34 (44%) and made six three-pointers on 26 attempts.  The Wildcats had 15 assists to nine turnovers while Truman had eight assists to 14 giveaways.
