Box Score

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Truman Women's Basketball team knocked off the defending Midwest Region champion and 2016 NCAA Final Four participant Grand Valley State 74-69 on the Lakers home court on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Sloane Totta scored 12 of her game high 16 points in the first half. Totta knocked down two triples and Montira Mosby another in the final two minutes of the second quarter as Truman took their largest lead of 15 points, 39-24.

The Lakers, ranked 13th in the initial Women's Basketball Coaches Association preseason poll, got a triple just before half from Lindsay Baker and scored the first nine out of the locker room to close back to within three points at 39-36.

Rachel Steinhoff and Cassidy Clark righted the ship. Steinhoff splashed her only three-point attempt and Clark followed with a bucket. GVSU fought back to tie the game at 46 with over three minutes left in the third quarter but Clark converted on a three-point play and Truman scored seven out of the last eight points of the period to lead 53-47.

A three-pointer by Bailey Cairnduff trimmed Truman's lead to three in the first minute of the fourth. Clark, Totta and a three-point play by Brooke Bailey pushed the lead back out to double-digits at 62-52 with less than seven minutes to play.

From there it was a battle of punch, counterpunch. GVSU scored seven straight of their own to close back to three but Ashley Hartwig pushed the lead back out to seven with two free throws and a hoop with 2:49 left.

Five more by the Lakers was countered by another basket from Hartwig. Janae Langs hit a pair of throws with 27 seconds left and after a Totta free throw got the Lakers to within two at 71-69 with 16 seconds left.

Totta was sent to the line again and made the first but second caromed off to Langs for the rebound. After a timeout, Baker attempted a three-pointer for the tie but missed its mark. Kayla Dawson got the rebound but promptly turned it over to the Bulldogs. Rachel Edmundson sealed the win with two free throws with three seconds left.

Totta was joined in double figures by Clark and her 14 points, Hartwig (14) and Brooke Bailey with 10. Truman shot 44% for the game with 7-of-18 from long range and 15-of-18 from the line.

The Lakers got 21 from Langs but were 4-of-23 from outside.

Truman will open their home season on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. against Central Christian College in Pershing Arena.
