RECAP: McKendree Advances Past Bulldogs In Penalties

Box Score (HTML)

INDIANAPOLIS – The McKendree Bearcats have advanced to the Great Lakes Valley Conference title game by winning a shootout with the top-seeded Truman Bulldogs. The Bearcats won by a 4-1 tally in the semifinal round of the tournament on Friday night.

The game was nearly a statistical dead heat. The Bearcats and Bulldogs finished with 11 shots overall and seven on goal through 110 minutes of play. Katie Mattingly made four saves in the first half as McKendree had the better of the chances with three corner kicks and a few free kicks from just outside the 18-yard box.

Truman turned the tables in the second and had three scoring chances to one for the Bearcats. However keeper Zoe Brouchu turned each away. In the overtimes, Truman was credited with two shots on goal while McKendree had just one.

The game advanced to a shootout and McKendree had the first opportunity.  Sydnee Carroll put the heat on the Bulldogs by converting on the first attempt and Kelsey Murphy's equalizer was stopped by Brouchu. Ashleigh Briggs made the next attempt while Brouchu was able to save Danielle Beers's shot to put Truman down 2-0. McKendree was able to punch in two more to advance to Sunday's title game against #2 Rockhurst.

The Bulldogs will await word from the NCAA on selections to the Division II Tournament next week. The selection committee will announce the tournament field on Monday evening at 5 p.m.
