RECAP: Early Goal Gives Truman Women's Soccer Tournament Win

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill. – The Truman Women's Soccer team made an early goal stand to advance to the Midwest Region Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated #3 seed McKendree 1-0 on Hanna Burke's sixth goal of the season.

Following an early foul called on the Bearcats, the Bulldogs played a ball into the 18-yard box, after a scramble, Burke was able to bury the ball past keeper Zoe Brochu at the 3:07 mark of the contest.

From that point on the Truman defense frustrated the high scoring McKendree machine. Bearcat leading scorer Sydnee Carroll had two of McKendree's five shots on goal that were each stopped by Katie Mattingly.

Mattingly notched her 15.5 shutout of the season and the Bulldogs shutout an opponent for the 16th time in 20 games played.

The two teams got testy at times drawing a combine 40 fouls called with 21 whistled against the Bearcats and 19 for Truman.

Truman moves on to face top seed Grand Valley State on Friday in the regional championship game. The Lakers were 2-0 winners over Missouri-St. Louis in their regional semifinal contest. The match will be played in Allendale, Michigan on Friday with a time to be determined.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-1-4 overall while the Bearcats end their season at 17-5-1.
