KIRKSVILLE, Mo. –Senior Courtney Strait scored nine of her game high 15 points in the second half and the Bulldog strong free throw shooting advanced them past the University of Missouri-St. Louis 59-51 in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.  
 
It was Truman's 20th win of the season, third 20-win campaign in the last three years and fourth overall in program history. The victory sends the Bulldogs to St. Charles, Missouri and the Family Arena for a rubber game with rival Quincy on Thursday night. Truman is the fifth seed in the tournament while the Lady Hawks earned the fourth seed with their 65-53 over the Bulldogs on Thursday night. Missouri-St. Louis has their season end with a record of 11-16 overall.
 
How It Happened:
  • Brooke Bailey broke a 7-7 tie with a three-pointer to give Truman a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bailey scored five of her 10 points for the game in the first quarter.
  • That three-pointer was part of a 12-0 Truman run that extended Truman's lead to 15-7 with 8:40 to go in the half.
  • Strait and Sam Andrews both connected from three during a Triton 13-6 run that trimmed the lead down to one at 21-20 with 1:34 left  in the second.
  • Bailey's two free throws sent Truman into the locker room with a 24-22 lead.
  • UMSL scored five in-a-row to take their only lead of the second half at 29-26.
  • Strait scored seven in Truman's 15-2 run to put the Bulldogs up 10 at 41-31 with 2:27 left in the third.
  • The Tritons counterpunched and scored nine in-a-row to close to within one at 41-40 on the first basket of the fourth quarter.
  • Rachel Steinhoff stopped the run with her only three-pointer.
  • Amber Daly answered back with a triple to bring it back to one at 44-43.
  • Truman scored nine of the next 11 points, mostly from the free throw line to regain an eight-point lead with 3:23 left. Cassidy Clark had five and Steinhoff gave Truman the 53-45 lead with the late hoop.
  • UMSL scored four straight from the line to whittle the lead down to four with a minute to play.
  • Both teams exchanged misses from three with Clark coming up with a key rebound. Following a timeout, Strait was fouled and sank both free throws to put Truman up six with 13 seconds left.
 
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Courtney Strait was 5-of-11 from the field and had a team-high seven rebounds while playing 37 of 40 minutes in her final game in Pershing Arena.
  • It was Strait's 114th career game in a Bulldog uniform, the most by any Truman player.
  • Bailey was the other 'Dog in double-figures with 10, going 3-of-3 and 1-1 from three.
  • Sydney Bloch led UMSL with 13 points and Amber Daly added 10. Season leading scorers Kelly Kunkel and Jordan Fletcher were held in check with eight and six points respectively.
  • Both teams shot 34% from the field and Truman had two more three-pointers on the day.
  • The Bulldogs went 20-of-24 at the foul line and outscored the Tritons by eight from the stripe.
  • Truman has won two straight in the all-time series with UMSL and leads overall now 19 to 17.
 
Up Next:
The Bulldogs and Lady Hawks will meet for the third time this season and seventh time over the past three years. Game time will be announced later Sunday by the league office.
