Bulldogs Give Up Two at No. 2 Greyhounds

INDIANAPOLIS - - The Truman State University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at No. 2 Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon, as the host Greyhounds dealt the Bulldogs a 5-1 defeat in the opener before stealing a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs (27-15, 19-9 GLVC) fell behind early in game one and couldn't rally before the Greyhounds (44-3, 25-3 GLVC) walked off in game two with a two-run home run in the  bottom of the seventh. Truman got a three-hit day, including a double and a home run, from sophomore Ashley Murphy, while freshman Christa Reisinger reached base five times and stole two bases.

Truman closes out the regular season on Sunday when the purple and white visit Saint Joseph's (Ind.) for a 12 p.m. twinbill. The Bulldogs will be playing for either the No. 3, No. 4, or No. 5 seed in the upcoming GLVC tournament based on Sunday's results.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - #2 Indianapolis 5, Truman 1
L: Dorsey (13-7); HR: Murphy (4); SB: Reisinger (39)
The Greyhounds used a four-run second inning to put a gap between themselves and Truman, as the host 'Hounds took a 5-1 victory in game one.

Truman broke through onto the scoreboard both into the runs and hits columns in the top of the seventh, when Ashley Murphy homered with one out to cut the UIndy lead to 5-0. However, the offense could provide no other support for starter Kelsea Dorsey, who struck out 10 'Hounds in her complete game effort. She allowed just three hits but was tagged with four earned runs.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - #2 Indianapolis 3, Truman 2
L: Henze (10-7); 2B: Murphy (7); SB: Reisinger (40), Mooney (5)
Truman took its turn at taking an early lead, as the Bulldogs plated two in the first four batters of the game. After Christa Reisinger and sophomore Riley Cook walked to start the action, sophomore Jamie Fowle singled to load the bases. Murphy then delivered a two-run double, before the Bulldogs couldn't push across more insurance early in the contest.

The Greyhounds scored once in the fifth, before a one-out walk came right in front of a game-winning two-run home run by Taylor Weck, as UIndy spoiled Truman's upset bid and walked away with two wins.

Reisinger and Murphy each recorded two hits, while Reisinger became the first Bulldog to crack 40 stolen bases in a season since 2006 when Christen Belcher swiped 45 as the single-season program high-water mark. Kindra Henze was dealt the loss, as she struck out three and gave up six hits in 6.1 innings of complete game work.
