Softball Splits with Saint Joseph's in Regular Season Finale

RENSSELAER, Ind. - - The Truman State University softball team rebounded from a gut-wrenching game one loss to salvage a split at Saint Joseph's (Ind.) College on Sunday afternoon, as the Bulldogs closed the regular season with a 5-0 victory after falling 5-4 in nine innings in game one.

Truman, who finishes the regular season at 28-16 overall (20-10 GLVC), will enter next weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament as the league's No. 5 seed and will face fourth-seeded Maryville (36-12, 20-10 GLVC) at 10 a.m. on Friday (April 29) at the EastSide Centre complex in East Peoria, Ill. The full bracket for the three-day event can be found here.

On Sunday, however, the Bulldogs closed the weekend with a split, as freshman Brooke VunCannon batted .600 in five at-bats, while junior Lex Van Nostrand recorded a double and a triple to go with a team-high four RBI in eight plate appearances.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Saint Joseph's 5, Truman 4 (9 innings)
L: Dorsey (13-8); 2B: Van Nostrand (7); SB: Reisinger (41)
The Bulldogs dropped game one in heart-breaking fashion, as the host Pumas scored four times in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull off a 5-4 victory against the Bulldogs.

Truman got on the board first in the top of the fourth when sophomore Jamie Fowle reached via error to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a Lex Van Nostrand double. SJC would rally in the bottom of the fifth to even the score, before the game progressed to a wild ninth inning.

The Bulldogs plated three in the top half, as a wild pitch allowed pinch-running senior Nikki Moss to score, before senior Whitney Richardson reached on an error that brought Van Nostrand to the plate. Brooke VunCannon then singled through the infield to score senior Cate Simon, giving Truman a 4-1 lead. However, SJC sandwiched a single and an RBI double around a groundout to cut the lead to 4-2 with one out in the bottom of the inning. After another Puma reached via an error, Saint Joe's walked off with a three-run shot off reliever Kelsea Dorsey, who faced just the one batter after starter Kindra Henze tossed 8.1 innings. Henze struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs, while Van Nostrand, sophomore Ashley Murphy, and freshman Michaela Mooney united for six of Truman's nine hits in the game.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 5, Saint Joseph's 0
W: Dorsey (14-8); 3B: Van Nostrand (1); SB: Reisinger (42)
Senior Kelsea Dorsey tossed a five-hit complete game shutout, while Lex Van Nostrand accounted for three RBI in a 5-0 Bulldog blanking in game two.

Truman scored first in the top of the third, when Van Nostrand singled home Brooke VunCannon with two outs for a 1-0 lead. The lead progressed to 4-0 with a three-run fifth, as Van Nostrand's first triple of the year allowed both VunCannon and freshman Christa Reisinger to score with ease. Jamie Fowle added an RBI sinlge two batters later to score Van Nostrand.

For good measure, the Bulldogs added a fifth run in the top of the sixth, when Reisinger singled home pinch-runner Valerie Schmidt.

While four Bulldogs each recorded two hits at the plate, Dorsey shined in the circle for her 14th win, as she struck out seven and didn't allow a run in the regular season finale.
