Softball Battles Sixth-Ranked Tritons to Split

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman softball team earned a home split with the nation's sixth-ranked team on Sunday afternoon, as the Bulldogs squeaked out a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the opener before falling 3-1 on a pair of late runs in the finale.

Truman, now 22-10 (14-4 GLVC), sits in a three-way tie for third place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with just 12 regular season games to play with both Maryville and Southern Indiana, while all three teams trail No. 6 UMSL (37-4, 15-3 GLVC) by one game for second place.

The Bulldogs will take the full week off before returning to action next Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Rockhurst in Kansas City.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 1, No. 6 UMSL 0
W: Dorsey (13-3)
In the battle of the aces, it was Truman's Kelsea Dorsey who emerged victorious in game one, as the senior struck out nine and kept a potent UMSL offense off the scoreboard entirely during a 1-0 Bulldog win.

Truman's run came in the first inning, as freshman Christa Reisinger bunt singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Serena Olson. Reisinger was sacrificed over to third base by sophomore Riley Cook, before coming home on a passed ball during sophomore Jamie Fowle's at-bat for a 1-0 lead.

That would prove to be enough for Dorsey, who kept the Tritons without a hit until the fifth inning. For the game, Dorsey surrendered just five hits – all singles – and walked three to improve to 13-3 on the season. Reisinger and Cook provided the hits for Truman, as the Bulldogs dealt UMSL ace Hannah Perryman just her second loss of the season (31-2), breaking a 22-game win streak.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - No. 6 UMSL 3, Truman 1
L: Henze (5-6); 2B: Van Nostrand (3)
Game two was another tight contest throughout, as both Truman starter Kindra Henze and Perryman put zeroes on the board through the first two innings. The teams scored runs in successive half-innings, as the Bulldogs' junior catcher Lex Van Nostrand ripped a double into the left-center corner with two outs in the third, plating Cook for a 1-0 lead. UMSL then performed its own two-out magic in the fourth, as a double by Ryan Logan was rewarded when Carly Kingery blooped a single on the right field line to even the score.

The game moved to the seventh, when UMSL brought two runs home to take a 3-1 lead on RBI singles by Erin Walker and Alex Stupek. Truman couldn't draw even in the bottom half, as the Bulldogs went down in order.

Truman recorded five hits in the nightcap, while Henze pitched 6.1 innings and struck out six. Perryman pitched both ends of the doubleheader, improving to 32-2 with a complete game, eight-strikeout effort.
