Softball Reaches Program Milestone in Split at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY - - Despite hitting .357 as a team and allowing just one earned run in 13 innings, the Truman softball team was forced to settle for a road split on Saturday afternoon at Rockhurst, dropping game one 2-1 before securing the program's 1,000th all-time victory with a 7-0 shutout in game two.

Truman sits at 23-11 overall (15-5 GLVC) with a doubleheader at William Jewell (19-19, 10-10 GLVC) next in line on Sunday (April 10) starting at 12 p.m.

Game 1 Recap (Box Score) - - Rockhurst 2, Truman 1
L: Dorsey (13-4); 2B: VunCannon (3)
The host Hawks rode single runs in the third and fourth innings to hold off the Bulldogs in game one, taking the opener by a 2-1 score. RU scored an unearned run in the third inning as part of an uncharacteristic three-error inning by the 'Dogs, before a two-out RBI in the fourth pushed the home team's lead to 2-0.

Truman turned up the heat in the sixth, as sophomore Ashley Murphy brought home junior Lex Van Nostrand on a sacrifice fly; however, three infield groundouts ended the game in the seventh, as the Bulldogs dropped their second straight.

Truman finished with seven hits, getting a 2-for-3 day at the plate from sophomore Jamie Fowle. Senior Kelsea Dorsey was the hard-luck loser in the circle, as she allowed just one earned run while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work.

Game 2 Recap (Box Score) - - Truman 7, Rockhurst 0
W: Henze (6-6); 2B: Van Nostrand 2 (5), Fowle (4), Moss (1); HR: Reisinger (5); SB: Reisinger 2 (34)
After scoring just one run in the opener, the offense broke out in game two – pounding away for 13 hits to rebound with a 7-0 thumping of Rockhurst in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs took little time getting on the board, as freshman Christa Reisinger scampered home in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Van Nostrand. Reisinger then belted her fifth home run of the season in the top of the third to push the lead to 2-0, before the purple and white opened the gap in the sixth with a four-run inning. Murphy came through with her second sac fly of the day, scoring Van Nostrand again, before senior Nikki Moss cleared the bases with a two-out double off the wall. Fowle closed the scoring in the seventh, doubling home Van Nostrand early in the inning.

Five Bulldogs finished with multiple hits, led by three from Reisinger. Senior Kindra Henze went the distance to pick up her sixth win, as she struck out seven and allowed only six hits.

The victory gave the Bulldogs 1,000 career victories in the 44 seasons of softball at the University. Head coach Erin Brown has accounted for 243 of the wins – the most by any of the program's eight head coaches in history – in what is now her 10th season at the helm of her alma mater.
