KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - No. 10 Southern Indiana, the highest scoring team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and sixth-best offense in the nation, proved why its been so tough to beat on Thursday night in Pershing Arena. Led by Jeril Taylor's 50 points, the Screaming Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 111-89.
With the loss, Truman fell to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC while Southern Indiana improved its unblemished mark to 15-0, including 5-0 in league play. The Bulldogs were led by
Jake Velky's 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and a 6-for-13 performance from behind the arc to go with seven rebounds and two assists.
Cory Myers was next up with 22 points (975 for career), four boards, six dimes, one block, and one steal.
Connor Erickson registered double-figures with 12 points, six rebounds, two swats, and one steal. Off the bench came
Billy Daniel, Truman's final double-figure scorer with 10 points, seven boards and three blocks.
Taylor scored his 50 on 13-of-15 shooting, 9-for-9 from range and 15 makes in 20 attempts from the free throw line. Taylor was one rebound shy of the double-double to go with six assists and three steals. His night and team's are explained a little more in depth at the bottom of this page. Behind Taylor were four Screaming Eagles with 10+ including Julius Rajala (12), Cortez Macklin (11), Marellous Washington (11), and Alex Stein (10).
In the first five minutes and change, the scoring was deadlocked at 15-15 with four ties and three lead changes. The visitors then used a 23-10 run over the course of 5:45 to pull ahead by 13, 38-25. The home team then answered with a 12-4 spurt of its own to cut the deficit to five, 42-37, with just over six and a half minutes to play until the intermission. During that storm, three different Bulldogs found the scoring column led by six of Velky's 28. From that point until the half, Southern Indiana outscored Truman by just seven, 20-13, and headed into the locker room up 12, 62-50.
Out of the break, the Screaming Eagles went ahead by as many as 16 right away, 70-54, before the Bulldogs were able to slim the margin to as few as eight four times (82-74, 86-78, 88-80, and 94-86). However, the good guys could never get any closer than that before the final 22-point difference.
Start time against No. 9 Bellarmine on Saturday was moved up to 3 p.m. because of the possibility of inclement weather. The Knights (13-2, 5-0 GLVC) won at Quincy on Thursday night in overtime by a score of 103-96.
