RECAP: Myers' Historic Night Leads Truman to 97-81 Victory at Maryville

ST. LOUIS – Prior to Thursday, Cory Myers had donned the Purple and White 108 times in his career, but the 109th time might have been the most special. Not only did Myers become the 28th Bulldog to score 1,000 career points (WATCH HERE), but he was the first to turn in a triple-double in over 22 years since Brian Vadehey did so against Emporia State on Jan. 7, 1995. Not to be overshadowed, Truman made quick work of Maryville on the road, 97-81.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the GLVC, while the Saints fell to 7-13 on the season and 1-7 in league play. With UMSL's upset win over Quincy, 70-69, Truman is alone atop the West Division for first place.

Myers secured that triple-double with over eight and a half minutes left until the final buzzer and did so with the best performance of his career. The Ankeny, Iowa native had 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, each of which is one notch shy of his personal best. The 6-3 guard was able to register career highs in field goals made (eight), three-pointers made (seven) and three-pointers attempted (nine) in 33 minutes of action. Myers was one of five Truman players with at least 10 points along with Connor Erickson (17), Zach Fischer (13), Nathan Messer (12), and Jake Velky (11). Dwight Sistrunk Jr. scored just four points, but did his damage in nearly every other category with a career-high nine boards, five dimes, two steals, and only one turnover in 31 minutes on the court.

As a team, the Bulldogs assisted on 27 of their 34 field goals, which is tied for seventh in program history, and have tallied at least 20 helpers in six games this year. Truman shot a blistering 54 percent (34-of-63) from the floor, including 62 percent in the second half, as well as an absurd 44.1 percent (15-for-34) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs also controlled the action in second chance points (16-7), bench points (28-17), rebounds (45-24), and assists (27-16). That marks the seventh time this season that Truman has brought down at least 40 boards and fifth time with 45 or more. The Bulldogs have outrebounded their opponent by at least 20 twice this year with the other time coming against Central Christian on Dec. 31 (+25).

In the first 20 minutes, Truman had one lead that lasted just 17 seconds when it was up 20-19 thanks to a Sistrunk Jr. layup. The Saints' biggest lead was 10 and came under three minutes into the game when it was 12-2. However, the Bulldogs came to life at the end of the first half and into the second as they outscored the Saints 40-9 over the course of 10 minutes to go up by 23, 74-51. Maryville fought back, though, and was able to slim the margin to 12, 78-66, with 7:21 to go thanks to a 15-4 run. Once again, Truman had the answer as it scored 12 in a row and had its biggest advantage of the night at 24, 90-66, with just over four minutes on the clock. From that point on, the Bulldog lead was never smaller than 14 en route to the 16-point decision.

Next up, Truman turns its attention to Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday with tip set for 3 p.m. inside the Tritons' Mark Twain Building.
