RECAP: Bulldogs Grind Out Big Road Win At William Jewell

Box Score
LIBERTY, Mo. – The Bulldog Football team used a powerful running game and a "bend but don't break" defense in a 24-14 road victory over William Jewell College on Saturday.

Truman ran for a season-high 243 yards on 52 attempts with Jordan Salima getting the bulk of the carries (31) for 133 yards and one of three rushing scores. Salima became the first Bulldog since Jerad Leverson in 2003 to have over 30 rushing attempts in a game.

On the defensive side, Sam Reeves had a "Bulldog best" four quarterback sacks to add to his season total of 10.5 that matches his 2016 total and is only two back of the single-season school record.

Reeves' biggest sack of the game came late in the fourth quarter with the Bulldogs holding on to a three-point lead at 17-14. The offense had just grinded out a 13-play drive that chopped nine minutes off the fourth quarter clock but was forced to punt with 3:12 left to play. Reeves fired out of his defensive end position and brought down quarterback Brad Strauss on the first play of the drive for an eight yard loss. Strauss gained seven of those yards back on second down but then slipped on the wet turf on third down six yards behind the line of scrimmage.

The Cardinals had to go for it on fourth and Strauss' pass was knocked away by Eric Yakle giving Truman the ball at the Jewell six yard line. Two plays later, Malique Robbins got his first rushing TD of the season to put the game away.

The bulk of the scoring took place in the first quarter. Truman took the opening drive and used a halfback pass on the game's first play with Jaden Barr catching a pass from Jordan Jorgenson for 29-yards. Later, Barr hit tight end Jake Ellis for 22 yards and Salima pushed across the line from two yards out and the 7-0 lead.

The Cardinals wasted little time in tying the game. On their second play from scrimmage, Struass found a wide open Wyatt Miller for a 70-yard strike.

After the Bulldogs went three-and-out, Jewell missed a 39-yard field goal that would have given the Cardinals the lead. Truman took possession and used 11 plays, including a pair of third down conversions, which finished with a one-yard touchdown by Hayden Holt and a 14-7 Bulldog lead.

Midway through the third, Strauss connected with Chance Nelson for a 24-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14 apiece.

Barr flipped the field on the second play of Truman's next drive with a 41-yard scamper but the possession stalled out at the 14. Danny Spencer put the Bulldogs back on top with a 31-yard field goal.

Barr had 99 yards on the ground and was 12-of-22 for 118 yards. Ellis reeled in four catches for 51 yards.

Strauss was 27-of-37 for the Cardinals for 340 yards and a pair of TD throws. Strauss used 11 different receivers during the game with Miller catching five balls for 108 yards.

While the Truman defense allowed 391 yards on the afternoon it was two defensive stops inside the one yard line that help preserve the win. Brett Judkins recovered a fumble at the one yard line as Strauss coughed it up on a third and goal play from the three. Kade Young forced Trejuan Mask out of bounds at the one on a fourth and goal play emanating from the six.

Truman will play their final road game of 2017 next Saturday when they make the short trip over to Quincy University for a 6 p.m. start. Today's game was also scheduled to start at six but impending weather moved the festivities up two hours.
