RECAP: Men's Soccer Drops Double-Overtime Thriller at Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Despite being out-shot 40-6 and playing a man down for nearly 50 minutes, the Truman State University men's soccer team took Lewis, one of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top teams, to double overtime in the 2017 regular-season finale. However, the Flyers notched a goal with just over a minute to play in the match and defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 4-3.

Truman (4-12-1, 3-10-1 GLVC) finishes up year No. 13 under head coach, Duke Cochran, while Lewis (11-4, 10-3 GLVC), winner of two in a row, will finish up its regular season at Drury on Wednesday before looking to the GLVC Tournament.

Mateo Montano joined the program last week, but will finish the season behind just Matt Yankowitz and Trevor Kaufmann for the team lead in goals with three to his name. Montano scored in the 28th minute on Friday to give Truman a 1-0 lead over Wisconsin-Parkside before a pair of goals in the 42nd and 52nd minutes on Sunday at Lewis. Four shots, three goals. Not bad for a debut weekend into Division II soccer.

Just like Friday, the Bulldogs struck first thanks to Michael Ruzicka's second goal of the year and Yankowitz's second assist. The Flyers' Nico Mueller knotted it up with the first of his two goals in the 34th minute before Montano's back-to-back scores. The Bogota, Columbia native was assisted by Brian Kane for the first and Austin Morgan the second time around.

The home team answered, though, with goals in the 53rd and 76th minutes by Devon Amoo-Mensah and John Horstman, respectively. After that, Truman nearly made it to full time with the score tied 3-3 before Lewis' Mueller did it again with just a minute and 13 seconds to play until the final buzzer.

The Bulldogs now say goodbye to 12 seniors including Kane, Nate Luebbert, Derek Merry, Nicholas Klemm, Ben Rosenblatt, Brendan Kissel, Josh Hall, Tyler Nord, Zac Suazo, Ben Nivala, Jory Knernschield, and Jeremy Rehagen.
