KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University volleyball team has won 12 matches in 2017 and none of them have lasted longer than four sets. The Bulldogs picked up their 10th sweep of the season on Friday night against Indianapolis, which is the most for the program since the 29-4 campaign had 14 in 2014.
The first six times that Truman (12-12, 5-7 GLVC) and Indianapolis (12-13, 7-5 GLVC) faced each other in the all-time series, the Bulldogs didn't sweep the Greyhounds and won only one of those meetings. However, Truman has bucked such trends with sweeps in the squads' last two showdowns. Meanwhile, this season's Bulldogs reached the .500 mark for the second time in three matches and have won six of their last eight.
Friday,
Jasmine Brown continued to pace the attack with a team high 13 kills and only four errors on 34 total attacks for a .265 hitting percentage. Behind the team's lone senior,
Sam Yancy came to play with 10 kills and just two errors on 27 swings for a blistering .296 hitting percentage. That effort snapped an eight-match stretch in which Yancy was held to single-digit kills. Also on offense,
Emma Berthold sent home nine kills with an absurd .471 hitting percentage and
Savvy Hughes aided the onslaught with 34 assists.
On the defensive end,
Elle Renault (pictured) made the first start of her career in place of one of the GLVC's best liberos in
Lauren Wacker, and more than answered the call. Renault led the squad in digs with 18 to go with two assists and one service ace. Hughes and Brown also reached double-digits in digs with 12 and 11, respectively. Above the net,
Natalie Brimeyer was on top of the stats with five blocks along with a personal best four digs.
How it happened...
- In the first set, Indianapolis scored three of the first four points before Truman used an 8-1 run to go up by five, 9-4.
- From that point on, the margin was never smaller than four (9-5, 10-6 and 11-7) and as large as 10 (22-12) before the final score of 25-18.
- In the second set, the Bulldogs rattled off eight of the first 11 points and forced a timeout by the Greyhounds.
- The visitors used a timeout, but the home team kept the pressure on by pushing its lead to seven, 11-4.
- Indianapolis kept battling though and cut the deficit to three, 12-9, with a 5-1 spurt.
- After the Bulldogs timeout right there, they scored four in a row and were up by seven, 16-9.
- Once again, though, the away team bounced back with six of the next seven points and was within two, 17-15.
- After that, despite the Greyhounds cutting the margin to one at 18-17, the Bulldogs slammed the door with seven of the final eight points and another 25-18 set victory.
- Indianapolis scored four of the first five points in the third set before Truman registered five in a row to go up by two, 6-4.
- The Greyhounds proceeded to tally six of the next eight points and were up by two, 10-8.
- After five more ties, the final one coming at 19-19, Truman took the lead back and never gave it up for a 25-23 victory and win in straight sets.
Next up, the Bulldogs will host Southern Indiana on Saturday in Pershing Arena with first serve set for 3 p.m.
