EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The Truman State University volleyball team's 2017 season came to a close on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Two-seeded McKendree defeated the seventh-seeded Bulldogs in straight sets to move on to the semifinal round against Rockhurst on Saturday.
After winning 10 of its last 13 matches to end the regular season, Truman finishes with an overall record of 17-15. Meanwhile, McKendree avenged GLVC Tournament losses to the Bulldogs in both 2014 (3-2) and 2016 (3-0) to improve to 23-7 on the year.
In the two teams' most recent meeting, the Purple and White were led by
Jasmine Brown in her last match as a Bulldog (14 kills),
Savvy Hughes (37 assists and 13 digs),
Natalie Brimeyer (two block assists), and
Claire Viviano (two block assists).
How it happened...
- In the first set, aside from ties at 18-18 and 19-19, Truman was never able to take the lead.
- McKendree scored four of the first five points and pushed its lead to as many as six on five different occasions, the last coming at 17-11.
- Then, the Bulldogs used a 7-1 run to knot things up at 18-18.
- After the second tie at 19-19, the Bearcats rattled off six of the final eight points to win the set, 25-21.
- For the second set, the score was tied or Truman led for all but four of the 50 total points.
- There were seven deadlocks, the first five of which came in the initial 16 points.
- From that point until late in the set, the Bulldogs had the lead, which grew to as big as five, 13-8.
- Once the Purple and White had 22 points and were ahead 22-18, McKendree scored six of the next seven points to go ahead by one, 24-23.
- Truman tied it up one final time at 24-24, but the Bearcats tallied the final two points to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
- McKendree continued that momentum into the third set and began it with eight of the first nine points.
- Truman responded with an 8-2 spurt of its own to pull within one, 10-9.
- The Bulldogs eventually tied things up at 12-12 and that was the first of six ties.
- The Purple and White's lone lead came at 14-13 before McKendree took the advantage back and never gave it up before the 25-23 set victory.
A young Truman team says goodbye to just one senior,
Jasmine Brown, and with the addition of one signee will have a roster of 15 once again next fall.
