KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - In a match where each set was decided by three points or less, the Truman State University volleyball team dropped a four-set thriller with visiting Rockhurst on Friday night inside Pershing Arena. The Hawks defeated the Bulldogs with set scores of 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, and 25-22.
Truman (14-13, 6-8 GLVC) had its three-match winning streak snapped while Rockhurst (23-6, 11-4 GLVC), who received 17 votes in Monday's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, has won five in a row and nine of its last 10. Friday, the Bulldogs were led by
Jasmine Brown (14 kills),
Savvy Hughes (37 assists),
Lauren Wacker (pictured/25 digs), and
Natalie Brimeyer (eight blocks). After just five of those 25 digs, Wacker joined the 1,000-dig club.
How it happened...
- The first set was the tightest one of the night as it saw a combined 10 ties and five lead changes.
- Through the first 18 points of the set, each team had a lead of four points including Truman's at 6-2 and Rockhurst's at 11-7.
- The home team then scored five points in a row to go ahead by one, 12-11, and force a visitors' timeout.
- There were six more ties, the final one coming at 20-20, before the Hawks rattled off five of the final seven points to win the set.
- In the second set, the away team led the Purple and White by as many as eight, 13-5.
- Truman battled to within four three times, but Rockhurst went ahead by seven anyway, 18-11.
- Then came a 6-0 run for the Bulldogs that cut the margin to one, 18-17, but the Hawks stopped the bleeding once again to go up four, 23-19.
- Again, Truman wasn't done, though, and tallied seven of the final eight points while escaping four set points to win the period.
- In the third set, the Bulldogs led by three on three different occasions including 18-15, 19-16 and 20-17.
- However, the Hawks scored eight of the final 10 points to take the set.
- In the fourth, after Truman scored the first two points, Rockhurst rattled off five in a row to go up by three.
- The Bulldogs battled throughout the set and eventually took a one-point advantage, 17-16.
- After that, Truman led by as many as two on three occasions including 19-17, 20-18 and 21-19.
- Rockhurst proceeded to end the set on a 6-1 spurt that sealed their victory in four.
Next up, Truman will host William Jewell for
