MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Sunday's doubleheader for the Truman softball team was all about pitching as the Bulldogs split a pair of duels against the likes of Delta State and Mississippi College. The Purple and White fell to the Statesmen 1-0 before walking off with an eight-inning win over the Choctaws, 2-1.
With the split, Truman now sits at 1-3 overall while Delta State improved to 5-5 and Mississippi College dropped to 5-4. On the day,
Christa Reisinger had four hits in her six at-bats and in 2017, she has picked up right where she left off from her freshman season. So far, in four games, Reisinger is hitting .667 (8-for-12) with two hits in each contest. Also on Sunday, freshman
Alyssa Rivera had a couple base knocks, both in the first game.
In the morning, the only scoring that happened came in the third inning when Delta State's Kory Watterson singled to left and brought in Abi Gibson. That was junior-transfer,
Nicolette Simpson's one blemish on the day as she hurled seven innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with only one walk and three strikeouts. The Bulldogs were held to just four hits, two apiece from Reisinger and Rivera. Truman was able to get a runner in scoring position only twice, once in the fifth and once in the sixth.
In game two, the Bulldogs were on the board in the first with
Lex Van Nostrand's sacrifice fly to second that scored Reisinger. Later, in the fourth, the Choctaws knotted things up at one apiece and it would stay tied until the bottom of the eighth inning.
Michaela Mooney was placed at second to start, pinch-hitter
Haley Wells popped up a bunt for the first out and Reisinger drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Then
Ashley Murphy stepped into the box, doubled to right center to push Mooney across and Truman had captured its first win of the season.
Just like Simpson,
Lauren Dale went the distance with one earned run allowed on only three hits with five free passes and a pair of punchouts. On the other side, Mississippi College's Adrianna Morgan took a tough-luck loss after giving up two runs, neither of which were earned.
Next up, the Bulldogs will play in Trevecca Nazarene's Music City Invitational in Hendersonville, Tenn. on Feb. 17-19. Truman will start with Saginaw Valley State that Friday and first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
