RECAP: Truman Stunned At Buzzer By Saints

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Alex Wolf's putback at the buzzer gave #11 Maryville an 80-78 upset victory over #6 Truman in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament. Ashley Hartwig led the Bulldogs with a career high 23 points.

The game featured three buzzer-beaters, 11 ties and 17 lead changes but it was the final change that ended the Bulldogs season.

Brooke Bailey tied the game at 78 on a left baseline three-pointer with 31 seconds left. The Saints used a pair of timeouts, the last coming with seven seconds left, to set up their final play.

Stephanie Sherwood took a 10-foot jumper from the right 45 that caromed off the rim to Wolf. The Saints' senior gathered the ball in and beat the clock. After a quick video review by the officials, the basket counted and the game ended.

The Saints used the long ball early to build up a six-point lead on the Bulldogs in the first quarter. Mary Barton's triple at the first quarter buzzer gave Maryville the lead back at 20-18. They would hold on to that advantage and led by as many as eight points until Sloane Totta's three-pointer with 3:05 left in the third quarter that put Truman up 47-46. Totta knocked down all four of her triples on the afternoon.

Rachel Edmundson beat the clock at the end of three to give Truman a 54-52 lead.

The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair.

Hartwig scored her last field goal of the day to put Truman up by four with 3:03 left. The Saints countered on a three by Sherwood on their next possession. Cassidy Clark, who had no fouls in the first half but picked up her fourth with 8:25 to go, returned and scored on a second chance situation to extend the lead back to three.

Kayla Steward banked in a tying triple with 2:08 to go.

The two teams exchanged free throw makes before the clock flipped to under a minute to play.

Ali Ringering drew Clark's fifth foul and converted on a three-point play to put the Saints up 76-73.

Once again, free throws were exchanged and both teams were perfect at the stripe.

Following a Truman timeout, Edmunsdon found Bailey wide open on the left baseline for the tying three pointer before the dramatic finish.

Clark notched her fourth double-double in her final game in a Truman uniform. She scored 18 points and added 12 rebounds with two assists, two blocks and a steal. Bailey and Totta each had 13 apiece to go along with the career-high from Hartwig at 23. Hartwig was 9-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 at the line.

The Saints shot 57.9% from three making 11-of-19 attempts on the afternoon. Ringering and Barton had three apiece with Ringering scoring 24 points and Barton 17. Maryville was 13-of-16 from the foul line including 12-of-13 in the second half.

With the win, Maryville moves on to face top-seeded Drury on Friday in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Indiana. The Bulldogs season ends at 15-13.
