CLERMONT, Fla. - The pitching was on point for the Truman softball team on Monday as the Bulldogs played games five and six as part of their Spring Break trip to the National Training Center. The Purple and White shutout Auburn-Montgomery 2-0 before doing the same to Southern Connecticut State in the nightcap.
With the sweep, Truman has won nine of its last 10 to move six games above the .500 mark at 15-9. On the other side, Auburn-Montgomery has dropped five of its last six and sits at 15-12 while Southern Connecticut State fell to 0-1 after its 2017 season opener. Leading the Bulldogs at the plate on Monday were a pair of hitters with three hits including
Valerie Schmidt (3-for-4) and
Lex Van Nostrand (3-for-5).
In the first game, Truman scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. Van Nostrand got the party started with a double to left center before
Jamie Fowle put runners on the corners with a bunt single to first base. Then, with
Morgan McMahan at the plate, Fowle stole second and on the throw down, Van Nostrand broke for home and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. One out later, Schmidt tripled and
Riley Cook (pictured) singled to shortstop to push Schmidt across the dish.
Making her 14th appearance, but just the third start of her freshman season,
Alyssa Hajduk (1-2) earned her first win and was brilliant in the circle. Hajduk turned in her first-career complete game effort with four hits allowed, only one walk and 10 strikeouts. After giving up at least one run six of her first seven college outings, the Shorewood, Ill. native has thrown up a zero in seven of her last eight appearances.
For the nightcap, Truman tallied its two runs in the fifth inning and it started with a one-out double off the bat of
Ashley Murphy. After
Brooke VunCannon came in to pinch run for Murphy and McMahan singled, Schmidt brought in VunCannon with a sacrifice fly to right. Next up was
Kadie Orenstein and she came through with a double that scored pinch-runner,
Michaela Mooney.
Getting the start for the Bulldogs was
Nicolette Simpson (7-4), who won her fifth-straight decision, with 5.1 innings pitched. Simpson surrendered no runs on six hits with only one free pass and six punchouts. In relief,
Lauren Dale lasted 1.1 frames before Hajduk recorded the final out and her fourth save in six games.
Next up, Truman will play its final two games in Florida on Tuesday against the likes of Sioux Falls (1 p.m. ET) and Ohio Dominican (3:30 p.m.).
