Early on, Lake Erie led by as many as eight on two occasions including 11-3 and 12-4 before the Purple and White began to assert themselves. They scored four of the next five points to pull within five, 13-8, before facing the same deficit at 14-9 and 15-10. That 10th point for Truman was part of five straight points that cut the margin to one, 15-14.
Despite that push, Lake Erie clinged to an advantage until Truman was able to finally knot up the score at 21-21. After one more tie at 23-23, the Bulldogs registered the final two points to take the set thanks to a bad set and an attack error by the Storm.
The second set was much tighter as it saw seven ties and two lead changes as opposed to three and two, respectively, in the first set. Through the first 16 points scored, neither team was able to garner a lead of more than two points until Truman did so on the 17th point, 10-7. The Bulldogs led by as many as five, four times including 15-10, 16-11, 17-12, and 18-13. However, the Storm battled back and regained the lead at 20-19. The third set was the closest one of the showdown featuring 14 deadlocks and eight lead changes. The margin was never more than two points for the entire set and even saw some extra action before Lake Erie won it, 26-24. After 15 points played in the fourth set, Lake Erie was ahead by three, 9-6, before Truman called a timeout and scored six of the next eight points to go up 12-11. After a final tie at 14-14, the Storm never trailed again, won 25-19 and the match in four sets.
