RECAP: Truman Wins First Set but Falls in Four at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. - Despite winning the first set at William Jewell, the Truman State University volleyball team lost the next three sets and dropped the match in four with set scores of 25-22, 11-25, 19-25, and 22-25.

With the loss, Truman drops to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Meanwhile, William Jewell snapped a three-match losing streak to improve to 5-10 on the season, including 2-4 in conference action. Friday night, the Bulldogs were led by Holly Hildebrand (nine kills), Savvy Hughes (29 assists), Lauren Wacker (25 digs), and Natalie Brimeyer (six blocks).

Truman scored the first point of the first set, but Jewell answered with three points in a row and pushed its lead to four, 9-5, before the Bulldogs called a timeout. Out of the breather, the Purple and White went on a 6-2 run to tie things up at 11-11. After four more ties, the final one coming at 17-17, the visitors scored back-to-back points to take the lead and never gave it up en route to the set victory.

The second set was all about the hosts from the get go as they rattled off 11 of the first 12 points. After that juncture, the margin was never smaller than eight, 11-3, and grew to be as big as 14 as it was in the final score.

In the third set, there were four ties and three lead changes in the first eight points scored. Once it was 4-4, Jewell took the lead back and never gave it up for the rest of the set. The Cardinals pushed their lead to as many as six multiple times.

After Truman scored the first point of the fourth set, Jewell answered with an 8-1 spurt to go ahead by six, 8-2. The Bulldogs didn't go away quietly and thanks to a 9-5 run were able to pull within two, 13-11. Even though the Purple and White were within one point on three separate occasions, they could never get over the hump and tie it up. The home team won the set by three and the match in four.

Next up, Truman is at Drury on Saturday with the first serve set for 3 p.m.
