RECAP: Truman Defeats Indianapolis for First Time in Five Tries

INDIANAPOLIS - For the first time in program history, the Truman State University men's basketball team has defeated Indianapolis. Thursday night inside the Greyhounds' Nicoson Hall, the Bulldogs were victorious, 86-80, to improve to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Indianapolis (10-6, 4-4 GLVC) has lost two of its last three and had its two-game home winning streak snapped.

Individually, Jake Velky (pictured) moved 23 points closer to 1,000 for his career and needs just 22 more to become the 29th member of Truman's prestigious club. Velky also finished with five rebounds, two assists and two steals while shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc and 6-for-8 at the free throw line. Brodric Thomas and Zach Fischer each reached double-figures as well with 18 points and 16 points, respectively. Fischer led the team in both boards (7) and steals (5) while Turner Scott paced the squad in assists (4).

In the team head-to-head, Truman out-scored Indianapolis 27-15 from deep, 21-9 at the charity stripe and 25-12 in points off turnovers. The Greyhounds turned the ball over 20 times thanks in part to 11 Bulldog steals, which led to the severe advantage in points off turnovers.

The home team opened the game with 11 of the first 13 points and it took the visitors some time to get their feet under them. With just under 11 minutes to play until halftime and trailing 20-14, Truman embarked on a 16-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game at eight, 30-22. Despite a pair of ties at 36-36 and 37-37, the Bulldogs scored seven of the final nine points and went into the locker room with a five-point advantage, 44-39.

The hosts began the second half with another big run, this time 11-4, and were back out in front by two, 50-48, just under five minutes into the period. After four more lead changes, Indianapolis was up one, 62-61, with 11:24 remaining, but wouldn't lead again for the rest of the night. The final deadlock, 64-64, came after a jumper from the Greyhounds' Tate Hall, but was followed by a Velky trey that gave him 15 points. From that point on, the Bulldogs scored 19 points to the Greyhounds' 16 and held on for the six-point decision.

Next up, Truman will look for its first-ever win at Southern Indiana (0-3) on Saturday with tip set for 3 p.m. The Screaming Eagles are 10-0 at home this season and have lost more than three games at home in a single season just once (2015-16) since 2007-08.
