RECAP: Eight is Great; Truman Defeats Quincy to Extend Winning Streak

QUINCY, Ill. - It wasn't pretty at times, but the Truman State University volleyball team did enough to defeat Quincy on the road and extend its winning streak to eight inside Pepsi Arena. The Bulldogs swept the season series with the Hawks and did so with set scores of 24-26, 25-12, 25-22, and 25-15.

With that eighth victory in a row, Truman improved to 15-3 overall, 7-2 in the GLVC and moved above the .500 mark in true road matches at 4-3. Meanwhile, Quincy had its three-match winning streak snapped to fall to 8-10 on the season including 2-7 in league play.

Junior opposite, Jocelynn Livingston (pictured), was the story on Tuesday night. Livingston sent home a match high 13 kills without a single error on 27 attacks for a blistering hitting percentage of .481. That effort broke a seven-match drought in which the McKinney, Texas native had failed to reach at least 10 kills, something she'd done three times in the nine matches before that stretch.

Livingston was joined on the attack by Morgan Smith (11 kills) and Natalie Brimeyer (10 kills). That makes three matches in a row (first three of her career) in which Smith, whom has seen much more playing time with the injury to Ellie Kaat, reached the 10-kill plateau . The Purple and White's other leaders included Savvy Hughes (38 assists), Sam Yancy (three service aces/ties personal best), Brimeyer (six blocks), and Lauren Wacker (22 digs).

As the score suggests, the first set was the most closely contested of the night with 13 of the match's 27 ties and eight of its 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than two until Truman used a 6-0 run to separate itself and go up by four, 14-10. Following five more deadlocks, the fifth of which came in the midst of a 3-0 run for Quincy, that spurt sealed the Hawks' first-set win.

The second set was all about the Bulldogs from the opening serve. The Hawks never scored more than one point in a row and were ambushed by the away team's runs of 6-1, 10-3 and 5-1.

The third period was all about runs as Truman was ahead 6-3 before Quincy answered with seven-straight points. Then came a 9-1 run by the visitors, but after that, despite being outscored 11-10, the Bulldogs held on for the set victory and 2-1 match lead.

All nine of the fourth set's ties came in the first 20 points scored before Truman scored 15 of the next 20 points to win the match in four.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a showdown with No. 11 Rockhurst on Friday in Kansas City with first serve set for 7 p.m. The Hawks (17-2, 8-1 GLVC) have won eight matches in a row just like Truman.
