LIBERTY, Mo. - After a scoreless first half and then some, the Truman State University men's soccer team was able to find the back of the net twice in the second frame.
Ryan Stites (pictured) and
Jeff Masters did the damage while
Roy Hart and
Jacob Gunn split the shutout in goal en route to the 2-0 victory.
Truman snapped a three-match losing streak to improve to 4-8-4 overall and 2-8-3 in the GLVC. On the other side, William Jewell lost three straight to end its fall at 5-12 on the season including 2-11 in league play.
Stites first career goal came off a corner kick in the 47th minute after
Collin McDonough dropped it in front of the goal and
Mateo Montano tapped it back to the redshirt freshman. The rest of the way, the Bulldogs' defense continued to hold tight before Masters added some insurance on a breakaway score with just under a minute to play. That goal gave Masters two for the season and three in his career.
As mentioned above, Truman utilized both of its goalkeepers as Hart got the start for the first 42 minutes and change before Gunn took care of the rest. The true freshman saved one shot while the sophomore had two stops of his own.
In the team head-to-head, the Bulldogs held the advantage over the Cardinals in total shots (19-13), shots on goal (13-3) and corner kicks (5-4). The Purple and White's 19 attempts came from 10 different players with
Trevor Kaufmann and Masters leading the way at three apiece. As far as looks that were on target, it was the same story as Kaufmann and Masters each had three.
With the 2018 season having come and gone, Truman says goodbye to seven seniors including
Tristyn Hasmer,
Danny Alter, Kaufmann,
Sean Appelbaum,
Ben Rosenblatt,
Austin Morgan, and
Michael Ruzicka. For 2019, the Bulldogs will return 20 of their 27 players.
