LIBERTY, Mo. - Friday night, the Truman State University volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped by No. 11 Rockhurst. Come Saturday and the Bulldogs were eager to get that sour taste out of their mouth as they swept William Jewell with set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-15.
With the season sweep over William Jewell, Truman improved to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in the GLVC standings. On the other side, the Cardinals (5-16, 2-9 GLVC) have dropped four of their last six matches. The Bulldogs now lead the all-time series by 10, 11-1.
In the two squads' most-recent meeting, the Purple and White were led by a red-hot hitting
Holly Hildebrand (pictured). Hildebrand sent home 11 kills with just one error on 19 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .526. In her 64 career matches prior to Saturday, the St. Louis native had never hit higher than .471 when racking up at least 10 kills (five instances). Not to be forgotten,
Jocelynn Livingston also had 11 kills and hit a blistering .474 in the process.
Savvy Hughes was at it again with 35 assists, three different players registered a service ace and six different Bulldogs had a solo block or block assist while
Lauren Wacker and
Meghan Gasper shared the team lead in digs with 13 apiece.
Despite being the closest of the three sets, the first didn't see a single tie or lead change. Truman scored the first three points of the period and its lead was never smaller than two (3-1, 4-2, 12-10, 13-11, and 14-12) for the entirety of the set.
The second set's four ties came in the first 18 points and once it was 9-9, the visitors rattled off a quick 4-1 run to go up by three, 13-10. The home team proceeded to pull within one five different times, but Truman wouldn't surrender its lead. The Bulldogs then embarked on an 8-2 run to win the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
For the third period, the set's six deadlocks came early on once again and had all occurred in the first 14 total points. The Bulldogs then stole all the momentum with five-straight points and led by five, 12-7. After that, the Cardinals could never get closer than four (12-8, 13-9 and 14-10) and the away team's lead grew to as big as nine (23-14 and 24-15).
Next up, Truman will travel to Indianapolis for the Midwest Region Crossover on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 12-13. The Bulldogs will play three matches in those two days with the opponents to be announced this week.
