KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - In a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Saturday, the Truman State University softball team hosted Missouri S&T on a cold and rainy Monday at Truman Softball Park. The Bulldogs run ruled the Miners in game one, 9-1, in six innings before dropping the nightcap, 9-7.
Truman is now 13-9 overall and 4-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play while Missouri S&T sits at 17-13 on the season, including 7-3 in league action. The Bulldogs were able to avenge two earlier season, nonconference losses in Rolla and also snapped the Miners' four-game winning streak.
In game one,
Lauren Dale (pictured) won her third-consecutive start to improve to 4-5 overall and got plenty of run support in the process. In six innings of work Dale gave up just the one earned run on five hits, walked only one batter and struck out two on 79 pitches. In her last five starts since falling to 1-3 on March 14, the junior hurler has started to look like the team's ace again. In that span, Dale has a 1.68 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched, only three walks, 14 strikeouts, and an opponent batting average of just .223.
Offensively,
Morgan McMahan led the team in RBI with three while
Alyssa Rivera,
Jamie Fowle and
Ashley Murphy each brought in one. Hits wise,
Christa Reisinger and Rivera each had two while five other Bulldogs had one base knock apiece.
In a game two that featured much more offense, at least one run was scored in nine of the 14 half innings. Missouri S&T struck first and built its lead to as big as five on two occasions including 6-1 and 7-2. Once it was 7-2 heading to the bottom of the third, Truman pushed two across in both that inning and the fourth to cut the deficit to one, 7-6. However, the Bulldogs could never tie it or take the lead before the final two-run decision.
Reisinger (2-for-3) and
Brooke VunCannon (3-for-4) each registered multi-hit games while Rivera, McMahan and
Michaela Mooney tallied one hit each.
In the circle,
Nicolette Simpson (1-2) took the loss after just three innings of work and gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits. In relief,
Alyssa Hajduk surrendered two runs, one earned, and struck out four next to her six free passes.
Next up, Truman will be at Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader on Friday and the start time in game one is set for 12 p.m.
