ST. LOUIS - Coming in on a season worst three-game losing streak, the Truman State University softball team picked up a much-needed sweep at a cold and wet Maryville on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won a pair of one-run decisions including 4-3 in game one and 5-4 in nine innings for the nightcap.
Truman (15-11, 6-6 GLVC) improved to 6-4 in one-run games for the year while Maryville (18-15-1, 5-9-0 GLVC) had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Offensively for the Bulldogs on Saturday, five different players had multiple hits including
Alyssa Rivera (4-for-8),
Christa Reisinger (4-for-8),
Jamie Fowle (2-for-7),
Ashley Murphy (2-for-6), and
Morgan McMahan (2-for-8). With that being said, it was all about what
Lauren Dale did in the circle.
Dale (6-6) went the distance for her ninth complete game and the win in game one before coming out of the bullpen (first time this season) to get the victory in the nightcap. All in all, the junior hurler finished with a 1.31 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched and an opponent batting average of just .225. Since falling to 1-5 with a 3.18 ERA at William Jewell on March 18, Dale has been sensational. In her six outings during that span, Dale has a 1.72 ERA in 36 and two-thirds innings pitched, 19 punchouts and six free passes.
In game one, McMahan put Truman up with an RBI double to right center in the top of the second before Maryville tied it up in the home half. One inning later, the Bulldogs took a three-run lead, 4-1, when Fowle doubled in Reisinger and Murphy pushed two across with a single. The Saints added one in the third and another in the seventh, but the visitors held on for the game-one win.
In game two, Rivera put Truman up early with a two-run bomb to left in the top of the first, her third home run of the season. However, the Bulldogs then went into a bit of a scoring drought as Maryville scored one in the third, another in the fourth and two more in the sixth to go up 4-2. In the top of the seventh, though, Reisinger moved into a tie for third in the program's record book with her 12th career triple that brought in both
Kayla Quanstrum and
Michaela Mooney (pictured) to tie it.
Mooney stayed in the game in right field and still had some magic up her sleeve. In the top of the ninth, she was walked with one out and moved to third on
Mackayla Gordon's first career double. During
Riley Cook's at-bat, Mooney stole home for the go-ahead run and Dale shut the door in the bottom half to seal it.
Next up, Truman is at Southwest Baptist for a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
