RECAP: Saginaw Scores Late To Upend Bulldogs

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Chad Gailliard caught a 2-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left to lift Saginaw Valley State to a 21-20 victory over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals scored 14 points in the final four plus minutes to overcome a 20-7 Truman lead.
 
The Bulldogs trailed 7-3 at half and dominated the third quarter. Jordan Salima scored his first touchdown of the season from 12-yards out to cap off an 11-play 80-yard drive then after Truman recovered on onsides kick, Josh Scheiderer booted a 36-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs in front 13-7.
 
Sam Reeves picked up his second quarterback sack of the day to take over sole possession of third on the all-time sacks list to force a fourth down in the Cardinals next possession and Truman set up shot at the Saginaw Valley 42. Later in the drive, Salima would go in again from six yards out and Truman was up 20-7 with 13:16 to play in the game.
 
The Cardinals then methodically drove 70 yards in 19 plays, converting on several fourth down opprotunities including the last on fourth and one from the three when quarterback Ryan Conklin scored his second TD of the game to trim Truman's lead to 20-14 with 4:41 to go.
 
The Bulldog offense went three and out and Saginaw began at their own 26. On fourth and 10, they got a completion to the Truman 33 but faced another fourth down when Jon Scheeler sacked Conklin at the 28. The quarterback called his own number again to pick up the first down. The called their final timeout after completing their sixth straight fourth down conversion at the two with 19 seconds left to set up the winning score.
 
In all, the Cardinals had 32 snaps in the fourth quarter compared to the Bulldogs eight and had the ball for nearly 12 minutes in the final 15.
 
Jaden Barr completed 15-of-24 for 146 yards with Brass Woods emerging as his top target. Woods caught several third down plays and finished with seven receptions for 88 yards. Salima finished with 32 yards on 18 carries.
 
Truman will wrap up their non-conference slate next Saturday on the road when they travel to face Valparaiso (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
