RECAP: Big Second Half Propels Bulldog Football To Victory

Box Score

VALPARISO, Ind. – Two big plays and a school record tying day helped the Truman Bulldogs to their first win of the season. The Bulldogs downed Valparaiso (Ind.) 34-20.

Freshman kicker Josh Scheiderer had two of his record-tying four field goals in the first half but the Bulldogs trailed 7-6 heading into the locker room. On the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Jaden Barr hit Mitch Nichols on the sideline and the senior raced 75 yards for the touchdown.

The two teams exchanged five field goals with Valpo pulling to within seven at 20-13 with 9:58 to play in the game following a 35-yard make from Dimitrios Latsonas.

On the ensuing kickoff, Lawrence Woods caught the ball at the eight and raced right up the field for a 92-yard kick return score. It was his second return for a touchdown this season and third for his career as a Bulldog. The squelched the momentum right from the Crusaders as later Barr called his own number and scored a 13-yard touchdown to put Truman up 34-13.

Valpo got a late TD but Truman ran out the clock to pick up their first win of the season.

Barr, and the Bulldogs, grinded out 265 yards on the ground on 56 rush attempts. Barr finished with 118 yards on 13 carries, while in the first half Jordan Salima had 17 rushes for 64 yards and in the second Andy Satulla ran the ball 21 times for 76 yards.

Scheiderer moved to eight for eight in his freshman season and became the sixth Bulldog kicker to make four in a game. The last was Mickey Masucci against Emporia (Kan.) State in 2007. The others were Dave Austinson (1982), Brad Schrader (1983) Scott Bresaw (1990) and Mark Kamphoefner (2003).

Truman finished with a season-high 387 yards of total offense, were six of 15 on third downs and won the time of possession with 32:59.

The Crusaders fall to 0-3 and had 371 yards of total offense. A good chunk came on Valpo's two scoring drives. They swept down the field to take a 7-3 lead in the first quarter on a six-play 75-yard drive then late in the fourth quarter went eight plays for 77 yards.

The Bulldogs will open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play next Saturday night at home against William Jewell. The Cardinals are 0-4 on the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m..
