RECAP: Andy Satulla Scores In Waning Seconds To Give Truman 27-20 Win In GLVC Opener

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Andy Satulla's first rushing touchdown in nearly two seasons came with 27 seconds left to play and gave the Truman Football team a 27-20 victory over William Jewell College to cap off Family Night at Stokes Stadium.

Satulla's last taste of the endzone came back in September 2016 against Lincoln University and he would not be denied on his seventh carry of the fourth quarter. The Cardinals (0-4; 0-1 GLVC) tied the game at 20 with 2:48 to play on a 34-yard field goal by Dalton Dye.

Truman's special team prowess, ranked third in Division II in kickoff return yardage coming into the game, helped set up the winning drive. Jewell pooched the ensuing kickoff to the Truman 32 that was taken by Reed McBroom in stride up to midfield. Facing a fourth and one at the 41, Satulla got just enough for the first down to keep the drive alive. After another one yard gain by the senior, Jaden Barr found Mitch Nichols for seven yards. Barr called his own number on third down and got around the corner to the Cardinals 18 yard line with 35 seconds to play.

Thinking the Bulldogs would be conservative and go for the winning field goal; Satulla took the next play up the middle, and then powered his way toward the near pylon for the winner.

Satulla finished with his third 100-yard rushing day in his career (101) and first since October 24, 2015 ironically against William Jewell. Five of his career nine rushing touchdowns have come against the Cardinals.

Barr also finished with his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game and matched Satulla with 101 yards on 14 carries. Truman ran for 255 yards on 51 attempts and had three rushing scores. Barr put Truman up 7-0 with a six yard run in the first quarter and Jordan Salima started the fourth with a four-yard run that gave Truman a 20-10 lead.

Truman led 7-3 at the half but the Cardinals took the lead on a four-yard run early in the third quarter by Anthony Pritzel out of the wildcat formation. Jake Ellis capped off an eight-play, 65-yard response by the Bulldogs to give Truman the lead back at 14-10.

After Salima's score, Jewell QB Will Schneider broke off a 51-yard run to close the gap quickly in the fourth quarter to 20-17. Each team couldn't muster much offense in the middle of the quarter before the Cardinals 10-play, 77-yard drive tied the game at the 2:48 mark.

Schneider threw for 242 yards and rushed for another 89 but was sacked five times by Truman. Bryan Edwards had two sacks along with 1.5 from A.J. Devecchi and one from Sam Reeves. Eric Yakle sealed the Truman win with an interception.

The Bulldogs will travel to McKendree next Saturday for another GLVC match-up. Kickoff in Lebanon, Illinois is slated for 1 p.m.
