RECAP: Lighting Strikes For Bulldogs In 45-38 Win Over McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. – Andy Satulla's two-yard rush with 3:31 to go and a Bulldog defensive stand inside their 10-yardline allowed Truman to escape McKendree with a 45-38 shootout win for their third straight victory, second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
 
Truman (3-3; 2-0 GLVC) led 17-14 at the half on Josh Scheiderer's season-long 46 yard field goal but had to endure a lighting delay that extended the start of the second half.
 
Once play resumed, McKendree (3-3; 1-1 GLVC) grabbed all the momentum. Preston Thompson capped off a 10-play, 77-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to give the Bearcats the lead at 21-17 and Josh Lazaro added a 30-yard field goal add three more to the scoreboard.
 
Jaden Barr righted the ship and engineered a tying touchdown drive with a three-yard run with 2:01 left in the third quarter.
 
Reece Metcalf scored from a yard out to finish a 12-play 79-yard drive early in the fourth to put McKendree back in front, however the first play of Truman's next drive was Jordan Salima taking the ball to the house from 66-yards away to make it 31-all. McKendree countered with Thompson scoring five plays later from 25-yards out and McKendree was back on top 38-31.
 
The lead didn't last long. Nine seconds to be exact as that was the time it took Lawrence Woods to burn the Bearcats for the second time in his career and return his fourth kick for a touchdown as Woods went 89 yards to even the game.
 
That strike wasn't the only thing that hit the game, more lighting was detected right after the extra point and the game halted again.
 
This time it was Truman who benefited from the delay. The recharged defense was able to force a punt after Sam Reeves picked up a quarterback sack on third and 11 when play resumed.
 
Truman took over at their own 45 and following a big third down completion from Barr to Mitch Nichols for 16 yards when they needed 13, Satulla galloped down to the two on a 17-yard rush. He would score on the next play to give Truman the lead at 45-38 with 3:31 to play.
 
McKendree mounted a charge. Reece Metcalf completed passes to Jalyn Williams for seven and 33 yards and after a pass interference call, the Bearcats had first and goal at the Truman six. Facing a fourth and goal, Metcalf's pass was knocked away by D'Anthony Knight.
 
Truman's final drive drained the Bearcat timeout supply and Brock Rohler punted the ball. The positive return at midfield by Matt Cole was negated by an illegal block so the Bearcats started at their own 41.
 
Just like last week's game against William Jewell, the Bulldog defense got the interception to seal the deal. Jordan Siegel picked off Metcalf at the Truman 22.
 
Barr finished 17-of-21 for 131 yards passing and a 3-yard TD pass to Jake Ellis. He added 91 yards rushing and two more touchdowns and now has accounted for over 50 in his Truman career. Salima had a season-best 134 yards on the ground and Satulla gained 93 yards on 12 attempts. Brass Woods made three catches for 33 yards and Malique Robbins a pair for 24.
 
Thompson ran for 129 yards and Jace Franklin gained 111 on 21 attempts. Metcalf completed 24-of-38 for 258 yards and McKendree gashed Truman for 506 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs returned the favor with a season-high 442 yards on offense.
 
Truman returns to Kirksville and Stokes Stadium for Homecoming next Saturday when the Lincoln Blue Tigers visit for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
