EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Ever since an 0-2 start to the GLVC season, the Truman State University volleyball team has rattled off three-straight sweeps to get to a season high seven games above the .500 mark. Friday, the Bulldogs swept Southern Indiana with set scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-17.
Truman (10-3, 3-2 GLVC) now leads the all-time series with Southern Indiana (7-7, 1-5 GLVC) by nine, 11-2. In the two teams' most-recent meeting, the Bulldogs were led by
Ellie Kaat (13 kills, .290 hitting percentage and three block assists),
Savvy Hughes (33 assists),
Lauren Wacker (three service aces and 15 digs),
Claire Wandrey (three aces), and
Natalie Brimeyer (three block assists).
The first set was, by far, the tightest one of the night as it saw 11 of the match's 16 ties and four of its seven lead changes. Neither team led by three until Southern Indiana went ahead on the 15th point, 9-6, before Truman scored four straight to go up by one, 10-9. Then, following six more deadlocks, the final one being 17-17, the Bulldogs scored eight of the final 12 points to win the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
All five of the second set's ties came in the first 18 points scored as it was 9-9. For Truman, that 18th point came in the midst of a 9-1 run that put it up by six, 16-10. From there until the end of the set, Southern Indiana was never closer than three, 16-13, and the Bulldogs led it by as many as nine including 24-15 and the final of 25-16.
Even though the third set was Truman's most dominant of the night, the Bulldogs recorded their worst hitting percentage of the match at .194. The Purple and White opened with a 9-0 spurt and their lead was never smaller than seven (11-4, 12-5 and 24-17) throughout the entire period.
Next up, Truman is at Bellarmine on Saturday with first serve set for 2 p.m. central time.
