RECAP: #25 Bulldogs Edge Missouri-St. Louis 66-61 To Match Best Start Ever

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Matching both their best start in school history at 15-2 and their overall win total from last season, the #25 Truman Women's Basketball team picked up their fourth straight win with a 66-61 grinder over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday night in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs (15-2; 6-1 GLVC) looked to be on cruise control early leading 18-12 after one and extending the margin out to 15 points with 2:27 left in the second quarter. Rachel Edmundson scored 12 of her game high 19 points in the first half and Brooke Bailey added an exclamation point with a three-pointer at the horn to send Truman into the half with a 35-21 lead.

The third quarter was an offensive struggle for the Bulldogs and allowed the Tritons (8-8; 2-5 GLVC) to creep back into it. Truman missed their first nine shots and went 2-of-17 in the quarter while UMSL made 50% of their shots and closed to within four at 43-39.

Sloane Totta made just the second Bulldog field goal with three seconds left and it carried over with Katie Jaseckas and Totta scoring the first four in the fourth to restore the 10-point advantage.

Truman wouldn't let the Tritons get within two possessions but also couldn't pull away. UMSL was able to whittle five off the 10-point lead in a timeout filled final minute.

Edmundson was 5-of-8 from distance and 6-of-11 overall for 19 points. Bailey matched her career-high with 18 points and nine Bulldogs scored points. Maddie Re pulled down 10 rebounds.

UMSL got 17 points from Kaitlynn Henning and a double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds from Alex LaPorta.

The win gave the Bulldogs a 15-2 record that matched the "Sweet Sixteen" team of 1998-99 for the best start to a season and last year's 15-11 overall record.

A pair of four-game winning streaks will be on the line Saturday when Truman host Maryville University at 1 p.m. The Saints enter with an 11-5 overall mark and 5-2 conference record after knocking down 14 three-pointers in an 84-57 road win at Quincy on Thursday. Tip time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
