RECAP: Bulldogs Fall to Red-Hot Tritons

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team came into the day on the heels of qualifying for the GLVC Tournament, a game behind eight seeded Illinois Springfield. Truman battled against Missouri St.-Louis, who have lost just once since October 8, but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 26-14).

Truman jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start the first set, with three kills from Ellie Kaat and an ace from Lauren Wacker. Truman expanded their lead to 8-2, but the Tritons countered with a 6-0 run to tie the set. Truman gained the lead back, and would not lose it until back to back aces but UMSL ahead 14-13. The hosts closed the set on an 11-5 run to take the set 25-18.

Much like the first set, Truman started out the second set with a lead. Two kills from Kaat and one from Morgan Smith got the Bulldogs up 5-3, but a 7-2 run by UMSL got the Tritons in front. Jocelynn Livingston and Sam Yancy got back to back kills out of the timeout to get the Bulldogs within one but they would come no closer as Truman took the second set 25-18.

The tables turned in the third set, as UMSL jumped out to the quick lead at 7-3. Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs reeled off five straight points—with two kills from Yancy and two blocks from Ambria Whitlock—who finished with a team high five in the match and 12 total this weekend. In the middle of the set, the teams seesawed back and forth giving and taking the lead—being tied at 11, 12, 15, 16, 19, 21, 22, 23 and 24. UMSL would get the last two points of the set to finish the set 26-24 and take the match.

Kaat and Livingston tied for the team lead with nine kills, while Elise Hardesty led the team with 18 assists. With the loss today, the Bulldogs are now two games behind Illinois Springfield and Southern Indiana, who are tied for the eighth seed with two matches remaining.

The Bulldogs will come home for their final matches of the season on Friday against McKendree at 7 p.m. and then Senior Day against Southern Indiana Saturday at 3 p.m.
