QUINCY, Ill. – A dominating 63-14 win by the Truman Football team over the Quincy Hawks give the Bulldogs their best start since 1994.
Cody Schrader and Jaylin Jefferson both ran for over 100 yards and
Jaden Barr tossed tehree touchdown passes in the rout over the Hawks. Jefferson had 129 yards on 19 carries and two scores while Schrader ripped off a 59-yard touchdown and finished with 126 yards on 11 attempts.
The team ran for 343 yards on 52 attempts while
Jaden Barr was efficient in the passing game. Barr did the majority of his damage in the first half finishing with 17 completions on 25 attempts and a season-high 217 yards. Tight end
Jake Ellis caught seven passes, two for touchdowns.
Ellis reeled in the first score of the game when he scored on an 11-yard pass play on Truman's first possession.
Quincy raced down the field to tie the game. The Hawks went 80 yards on nine plays in 1:52 with Jalen Griffen scoring on a one-yard rush.
Spencer Newell, Tayor Cornish and the Truman defense set up the next Truman score. Cornish pinned the Hawks deep with a punt, the Truman defense forced a quick three and out and Newell returned the punt 21 yards to the Hawk 30. On the first play, Newell caught a pass from Barr and went into the endzone for the 14-7 lead.
Truman scored two touchdowns in both the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach. Ellie hauled in a 19-yard touchdown before Schrader scampered 59-yards for his first career collegiate touchdown.
Jordan Salima scored on a nine-yard rush in the third and Schrader punched it in from six away with 31 seconds left in the third.
Jefferson scored both of his touchdowns in the fourth and were the bookends on a 21-yard pick-six by
Michael Prewitt giving Truman four straight weeks of a non-offensive touchdown.
Reed McBroom led the defense with nine stops and two sacks.
Truman racked up 560 yards of total offense with 343 coming via the ground game. Quincy had 313. The Bulldogs dominated the possession time at 37:07 and forced four Quincy turnovers. The 63 points were the most scored by a Truman team since joining the GLVC and matched a 63-point outburst in 2012 in a non-conference game against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
The Bulldogs return home to face Southwest Baptist next Saturday night at Stokes Stadium. Truman and SBU will kickoff at 6 p.m.
