MIDLAND, Mich.—The Truman State men's soccer team came into the season looking to improve upon their 23 goals scored mark last season. They did get two different players on the scoreboard—
Collin McDonough in the 16
th minute and
Mateo Montano in the 64
th; but Northwood prevailed 3-2.
Northwood got on the board early with a goal in the seventh minute. After a corner kick from Charlie Evans there was a scrum on the right side of the net and Jack Doyle managed to get his foot on the ball and put into the back of the net just 6:41 into the game. However, Truman answered back quickly with a 16
th minute goal from McDonough. After a foul in the box the Weldon Spring, Mo. native converted on the shot to tie the game up.
At the end of the first half, Northwood got their chance with a penalty shot. Luke Neves hit the back of the net with just seconds remaining to put Northwood up 2-1 at halftime.
The second half started out a little slower than the first, with the first shot on goal coming in the 54
th minute. An effort from Northwood's August Hunter was saved by
Roy Hart, giving the Truman goalkeeper his first save of the season. However, Northwood kept up the attack and got their third goal in the 58
th minute off the foot of Jared Suddon. Neves got the assist.
Truman got back in the game as a goal from Montano in the 64
th made it 3-2. After a giveaway from the Northwood keeper, Montano took advantage and found the back of the net to get Truman within striking distance. Despite the three corner kicks in the rest of the way, the Bulldogs could not muster the equalizer.
A strong second half effort by the Bulldogs fell just short but the game was fairly balanced overall. Both teams converted on a penalty shot, both teams had six shots in the game and four on goal. Each team had three corner kicks.
The team hits the field next at Purdue Northwest in Hammond (Ind.) on Saturday, for another chance to get into the win column.
