KIRKSVILLE, Mo - The Truman Women's Basketball team bounced back into the win column after they defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis 63-58. A 9-3 run to start the second half gave Truman its first lead which they would not relinquish. The Bulldogs are now 16-5 overall and 12-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Both teams struggled in the first quarter as they combined for 19 total points. The Tritons shot 5-of-22 from the field and 0-for-7 from three as Truman was 4-of-11 from the field and 1-for-5 behind the arc. During this time, the Tritons outrebounded the Bulldogs 16-8 as nine of those rebounds were on the offensive glass. The shooting from Katie Jaseckas kept the Bulldogs close in the first half as she was 3-for-3 from downtown. A Truman 7-4 run ended the first half with the Tritons leading 28-24.
The Bulldogs came out on fire with a 9-3 run on 4-of-6 shooting from the field to take the lead at 33-31. Truman extended their lead to double digits in the third quarter and entered the fourth up 47-36. UMSL went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to four in the fourth. The Bulldogs would get the lead back to double digits midway through the final quarter. The Tritons would go on an 8-1 run late in the fourth to make it a three-point ballgame with nine seconds remaining in the game. A few Bulldog free throws at the end secured the victory.
Katie Jaseckas led the scoring by tying a season-high with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 shooting from three. Sloane Totta was next with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Katey Klucking caught fire and scored 13 points and also added eight rebounds. Maddie Re also had eight rebounds in the win.
The Bulldogs shot 41.1% from the field and 29.2% from behind the arc. The Tritons outrebounded Truman 46 to 40 in the contest.
UMSL (11-2, 6-8 GLVC) was led in scoring Laura Szorenyi who finished with 18 points and Alex LaPorta who finished with 14 points. Kiara Stewart had 12 points, 16 rebounds with 10 on the offensive glass. The Tritons grabbed 20 offensive boards on the afternoon.
The Bulldogs will be on the road for the next three games as they will go to Bellarmine, to the University of Indianapolis, and to Drury University before returning home for my senior night.
