KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Hanna Hickey's converted on a penalty for the game winning goal with just over 12 minutes left in regulation to give the Truman Women's Soccer team a 2-1 win over Illinois Springfield on Sunday and wrap-up a six-point conference weekend.
It was Hickey's third goal of the season after she was taken down at the top of the 18-yard box by a UIS defender. She stepped to the ball and placed it in the top right corner to break the tie.
Truman struck first early in the match with Chance Douglass tallying her first goal of the season in the fourth minute of action. Off a thrown in to Faith Branson, the senior worked with her back to the goal toward the middle of the field, she then fed a leading pass to Douglass, who was the second Bulldog in the attack, who in turn buried the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
UIS went on the offensive after that goal and put the pressure on. They succeeded with the equalizer in the 22nd minute when off a blocked shot, Sierra Cenek gathered the rebound and with her right foot found the top right corner for the 1-1 tie.
The Prairie Stars continued to control the ball could not muster any scoring opportunities on the Truman defense.
UIS had one last push as time was winding down but the Bulldog defense again denied a quality scoring chance.
With the two wins over the weekend, Truman moved to 6-2-3 (21 points) in the GLVC race and are now within striking distance of the top two spots. The Bulldogs are two in front of Indianapolis and two back of McKendree and four behind Drury with nine points left on the table the rest of the season.
Truman will host William Jewell next Friday in the final regular season home contest then play at Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist on October 29-31 to finish up the slate.
