KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman Women's Soccer team will head into their extended weekend break a 2-0 winner over William Jewell College on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs are off on Sunday and will wrap-up the regular season with road matches at Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst next weekend in their quest to secure a first-round quarterfinal match in the upcoming GLVC postseason tournament.
The Bulldogs peppered the William Jewell goal with 29 total shots and 14 on goal. However, it was the the 13th and 14th shots on net that finally gave Truman the win.
With just under 22 minutes left to play, Hanna Hickey collected a thrown in ball with her back to the net then found Jessica Kozal on the right wing unmarked. Kozal, collected the pass, dribbled in a few steps then beat keeper Emily Glassman to her right for her first goal of the season.
Izzy Heintz beat a pair of defenders then fed a pass to Johanna Wallstab at the top of the 18. Wallstab lunged forward with her right foot and placed the ball just under the crossbar for the insurance tally with 11 minutes left to play. It was Wallstab's second goal of the season.
Truman keeper Tatumn Damron made her first collegiate start and had to be sharp early as Jewell had an early chance on the doorstep to attempt to take an early lead. She would stop the two remaining Cardinal shots on goal for her first career shutout.
The Bulldogs increased their GLVC point total to 24 points (7-2-3) with the victory and are just one back of Drury and one ahead of McKendree for second place before both play their matches later this evening.
