Bulldogs Push Hawks to Limit but Fall in Tough Match

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team closed out their homestand against Quincy on Saturday afternoon falling 3-0 (26-24, 25-8, 26-24) to the Hawks. It is Truman's sixth straight defeat to the their rivals from just across the Mississippi River.

The first set began with a seesaw of the first seven points, with Truman getting four of them. A 3-0 run gave Quincy the lead but kills from Allison Beaton and Morgan Smith knotted the set at six. After Quincy took a 10-9 lead, a 3-0 run put Truman back in the lead. The middle of the set saw both teams would take two or three points in a row and then the other would answer in kind. With the set tied at 21, Quincy went on a 3-0 run to reach set point. Hanna Berry kept the Bulldogs alive, then two more Hawk errors knotted the set at 24. But the next two went to the Hawks to win the first set.

In the second set, Truman was unable to get going in the set as Quincy jumped out to a 13-4 lead and kept Truman at arms-length from there.

The beginning of the third set went much to the Hawks favor as they led 11-5, but a 4-0 run with a kill from Ainsley Heise and a sneak set attack from Rachel DeFries got Truman to within two. Truman continued to chip away until they tied the set at 16 following a 4-0 run with kills from Berry, Smith and two from Beaton. The Bulldogs eventually took the lead at 22-21 as Ellie Kaat came up with a kill and Quincy committed two errors for a 3-0 Truman run. Quincy reached match point at 24-23, but Berry kept Truman alive to tie up the set. But the Hawks grabbed the next two points to finish the set and match.

Kaat led the team with ten kills, while DeFries led with 15 assists and Macy Vanfossan tied with Berry for the lead with ten digs.

Truman will be back in action next weekend at the Midwest Regional Crossover in Hammand, Ind. The event will be a Friday-Saturday event with each team competing in three matches; opponents still to be determined.
