Late Field Goal Lifts Indianapolis Past Truman 13-10 In Defensive Battle

KIRKSVILLE, Mo – Paul Buisman connected on a 40-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in regulation to give the Indianapolis Greyhounds a 13-10 win in the season finale on Saturday afternoon against the Truman Football team.

The top rated defenses in the Great Lakes Valley Conference lived up to the billing as Bulldogs and Greyhounds battled for sole possession of second place and a possible berth in the America's Crossroads Bowl later in December.

Truman struck first as the nation's leading rusher broke off a 76-yard touchdown run with 3:11 to play in the first half. Cody Schrader bounced to the outside and outran the UINDY defense to the endzone for his 22nd rushing touchdown of the season. The Greyhounds allowed only 77 yards per game on the ground this season.

On the first drive in the second half, the Greyhounds marched 11 plays and 59-yards but had to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Buisman for their first points of the game.

Truman played tit-for-tac as they responded on their next drive and went 55 yards in 12 plays before the Greyhound defense forced a 28-yard field goal from Jos Scheiderer to make it 10-3 Truman at the end of three quarters.

Kyle Borske poked the ball free from Schrader and recovered it at the Truman 35 on the first play to start the fourth.

Bryce Stancombe found Jon Eineman on the next play from scrimmage for a 23-yard completion and two plays later JaQuan Buchanan was pushed into the endzone to tie the game at 10.

Truman went three and out on their next possession, failing to convert on a third and two.

The Greyhounds methodically moved the ball from their own 20 and were aided by a pass interference call on third and 11 and an offside on third and five to keep the drive moving. On second and goal from the five, Jack Marth caught Buchanan behind the line of scrimmage and an incomplete pass forced a field goal attempt. Busiman missed as the ball sailed just over the upright from 25-yards out to keep the game tied with 5:53 remaining.

Schrader started Truman's next drive on a positive note with a 12-yard burst to go over 200 yards rushing on the day. However on the next play, Dylan Shelton sacked Nolan Hair for an eight-yard loss and eventually Truman would have to punt.

Taylor Cornish booted his longest of the season of 65-yards to the UINDY nine with 3:40 to go.

The 'Hounds gained 20 yards on their first two plays from scrimmage then on second and 14, Truman was flagged again for a hands to the face foul that moved the ball out to the UINDY 40. Stancombe completed three straight pass plays for 28 yards and UINDy was at the Bulldog 35.

Facing a third and six, Stancombe hit Ethan Hand out in the flat for a seven-yard gain and moved the chains again with the clock going under a minute to play.

Indianapolis positioned the ball to the left hash where Buisman drilled it from 40-yards out to put the Greyhounds in front with 19 seconds showing.

Truman could not sustain any deep presence in their final three plays.

Schrader finished with 202 yards on 30 carries and 1,855 yards on the season. He will end the regular season as the leading rusher for Division II football.

The Truman offense was held to 269 total yards and Truman was flagged six times for 65 yards while UINDY just once for five.

Stancombe completed 18-of-36 for 248 yards and Buchanan rushed 34 times for 94 yards.

Ben Watson, Ryan Olivas and Jake Closser picked off three Stancombe passes for Truman and Watson led the defense with 16 tackles.

Truman finishes the season 8-3; 4-3 in the GLVC. It is only the second time since the 1960 and 1961 season that Truman Football has had consecutive eight or more wins full seasons. Truman was 10-2 following the 2019 season. The 2020 season was played as an abbreviated spring season in which Truman went 3-1.
