ST. LOUIS—The Truman Volleyball team closed out its season Saturday as they took on the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons in the Gateway City and fell to UMSL for the second time this season 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16). In their final matches, Ellie Kaat had six kills, Katy Motz had 13 assists to lead the team and one ace, and Morgan Smith had five kills and 13 digs (which tied for the team lead).
In the first set, Truman jumped out to a 2-1 lead after kills from Hanna Berry and Kaat. From there, UMSL scored four straight and forced Truman to play catch up. Two points for the Bulldogs, including an ace from Ainsley Heise, brought Truman back within one. But for the rest of the set each time the Bulldogs would pull within one the Tritons would answer and finally pulled away to take the first set.
Smith started the second set with a kill to put Truman up, and much like the first set the second one began as a seesawing affair. Later in the set, UMSL scored four straight to go up 11-6. But Truman would fight back with a 4-0 run of their own to draw back within one at 14-13; which included kills from Berry and Allison Beaton. Unfortunately Truman could not draw any closer than one the rest of the set and ended up falling as UMSL scored the final four points.
UMSL scored the first three points of the third set, and once again Truman was forced to play catch up. The Bulldogs knotted up the set at nine after a 5-1 run that included two kills from Beaton and a service ace from Berry, but once again the Tritons repelled the Bulldogs and Truman was forced to catch up. From there the closest the Bulldogs would get would be one point at 14-13, and from there UMSL took control and won the set and match.
Beaton led the team with nine kills, Motz led in assists and Smith tied with Berry for the team lead with 13 digs. Heise, Beaton and Kate Benzing all tied with three blocks. The Bulldogs wrap up David Gannon's first season at the helm with six wins, and will return a roster next season was mostly made up of juniors and sophomores this year.
