RECAP: Bulldogs Drop Home Opener Against Hawks

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Volleyball team played their first home match since November of 2019 Friday night and fell 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22) to the Quincy Hawks. Ellie Kaat once again led the way with 11 kills for Truman, while Rachel DeFries tallied 25 assists and Lindsay Woltering surpassed her career high in digs, which was set against the Hawks last week, with 24 tonight.

The first set was tightly contested early on. Neither team was able to gain a clear edge on the other as they went back and forth giving and taking the lead. With Quincy ahead 16-15, the Hawks went on a 4-0 run to go up 20-15. The Bulldogs would pull to within two at 22-20, but Quincy took three of the last four points to take the set.

Set number two began much the same way as the two went back and forth early on. With the score at 10-9 Hawks, two straight kills launched a 3-0 run that gave the Hawks the edge and they held onto it for the rest of the set. Later on it was 20-13 Quincy and a 4-0 run brought Truman back within striking distance, but the Hawks finished the set to go up 2-0.

Quincy jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set, but Truman would rally back. With the score 9-7 Hawks, a 4-0 run gave Truman their first lead. Morgan Smith picked up two kills in the spurt and Ainsley Heise picked up one. The Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead the rest of the set and won by five.

Truman got off to a good start in the fourth set going up 6-4. Quincy would tie it at six but Truman went on a 3-0 run to take the lead back. Truman held the lead most of the set but tied at 19, Quincy scored four straight and would take the set and the match.

Smith and Sam Yancy each had double-doubles as Smith tallied ten kills and 15 digs. Yancy had ten kills and 11 digs.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on the 12th as they go to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst. Saturday's match at Illinois Springfield has been postponed.
