SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Two big runs in the first half had the Truman Women's Basketball team playing catchup as the Drury Lady Panthers captured their fifth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament title with a 76-60 win over the Bulldogs.
Truman will await word from the NCAA Division II selection committee on an at-large bid to the national tournament that would start next Friday back in the O'Reilly Family Events Center on the Drury campus. The Bulldogs were ranked third in the last regional rankings with four at-large bids available to go with the two automatic bids given to both the GLVC and GLIAC tournament champions. The selection show begins at 9 p.m. (CT) on Sunday night.
It was an 11-0 punch that started the festivities for the Drury as they raced out the the gate to put Truman down early.Â
Tiffany Davenport righted the ship and pulled the Bulldogs back to within two at 15-13 with 11 points on three, three-pointers.
However Drury's Kelsey Winfrey answered right back on the last Davenport triple and Drury scored the final eight of the first quarter to go back up 24-13.
Drury would keep the pressure on to start the second scoring the first eight more points for a 16-0 run upped their lead to 48-31 at the end of the half.
Katey Klucking scored the first four points out of the locker room for Truman and the Bulldogs got back to within a dozen. That would be as close as Truman would get.
Emily Parker led the Lady Panthers with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting and Drury outscored Truman in the paint 42-26.
The turnover bug bit the Bulldogs with 23 on the day while Drury committed just nine.
Ellie Weltha and Hannah Belanger were named to the All-Tournament team. Weltha recorded her sixth double-double in her last seven games with 12 points and 13 boards. Belanger dropped in four three-pointers and was the Bulldogs leading scorer with 16 points. Davenport finished with 13 and Klucking seven.
