KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman baseball team resumed its weekend set with Southwest Baptist on Saturday, and the teams split the two games. In game one, SBU got on the board early and cruised to a 13-1 win while Truman jumped out to a lead in game two and won 7-3. Ryan Carmack picked up the win in game one to improve to 3-0 while Zachry Schneider took the loss to drop to 0-6. In game two Michael Daggett (1-5) pitched a gem for Truman, going 6.1 innings and allowing just three runs (one earned). He got his first career win, while Kyle Smith (2-3) took the loss and Holden Missey got his first save.
Game One
SBU got one run in each of the first two innings, but a seven run top of the fourth blew the game open for the Bearcats. SBU added three more in the top of the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth. Will Fromm got Truman on the board in the bottom of the sixth to make it 13-1, which is how the game would finish.
Game Two
Daggett worked quickly through the top of the first, striking out two batters. In the bottom of the inning, Justin Dietiker led off with a double down the left field line. Kevin Donouhe followed with a sac bunt to move Dietiker to third. Later with two outs, Kory Carter came to the plate and the scorching hot bat of Carter sent a two run jack over the wall in right field to give Truman their first lead of the day.
Both pitchers worked quickly in the second and third innings, and Daggett didn't allow a runner past first in the top of the frame. But in the bottom of the fourth, Truman got Daggett some more run support. Carter led off with a single to the left side, and Fromm bunted to move Carter to second. Holden Missey walked, then Evan Kayser reached on a fielder's choice to move Carter to third while Missey was safe at second because of a throwing error. This loaded the bases for Will Wirt, who singled to left to bring a run in. Dietiker came up with two outs and the bases loaded, this time he doubled into left to bring two more in and make it 5-0 Bulldogs.
Steven Bradbury led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, and Carter followed with his second two run jack of the day.
In the top of the sixth, SBU got one back to make it 7-1. In the top of the seventh, things began to get a little dicey as the leadoff batter reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch before being driven in by a single. Daggett got the first out of the seventh, but the Bearcats were able to load the bases with one out. After that, Missey was given the ball and tasked with getting the final two outs. He gave up a sac fly to the first batter he faced but with two outs shut the door to get his first save as a Bulldog.
The two will be back at it tomorrow afternoon to finish their series, noon first pitch at Truman Baseball Park.
