KANSAS CITY--The Truman Baseball team found the win column on Friday afternoon by defeating William Jewell 8-7 in game one of the doubleheader. Connor McKenna (1-4) picked up the win going 6.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits, and the Bulldogs held off a late Cardinal rally to preserve the win. Thomas Hennelley dropped to 0-3 for WJC while Jack Owens picked up his first career save. The Cardinals got the better of the Bulldogs in game two as the hosts won 6-2. Nyk Yaquab picked up the win to move to 2-3 while Zachry Schneider took the loss to drop to 0-5.
Game One
WJC picked up the first run of the game on a sac fly in the bottom of the first. Truman answered in the top of the second as Kory Carter hit a solo shot to right field for his second homer of the year--first since March 19 at Indianapolis. The top of the fourth saw the Bulldogs expand their lead as Carter came through again with a two RBI single to the right side to bring in Will Fromm and Steven Bradbury. With no outs in the inning, Truman held a 3-1 lead.
Carter advanced to second on a groundout, and with two outs Brendan Kelly singled to left field to bring Carter in. In the top of the sixth, Truman expanded their lead as Holden Missey led off with a double and then moved to third as Jake Schneider reached on a bunt. Kolin Demel reached on a fielder's choice, but Missey was thrown out at home to keep it 4-1. A walk loaded the bases for Sam Smith, who reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded Kevin Donohue tripled to right center to clear the bases and make it 7-1.
WJC picked up one in the bottom of the sixth and then four in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-6. In the bottom of the eighth the Cardinals tied it up.
Fromm reached to open the ninth, and Jack Darwin pinch ran. He moved to second on a sac bunt, then with two outs a Justin Maloney single brought Darwin in for the winning run. Owens got a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.
Game Two
Just like in game one, WJC grabbed the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. In the top of the third inning, Smith walked and then stole second with one out. Donohue then singled up the middle to bring Smith in.
WJC grabbed two more runs in the third, then in the top of the fourth with no outs and runners on the corners Schneider hit a sac fly to make it a one run game at 3-2. But the Bulldogs would draw no closer as WJC scored three more in the bottom of the sixth.
After a day off due to incoming weather in the Kansas City area, the two will resume their series on Sunday with a doubleheader.Â
