Truman's Lawrence Woods Signs As Free Agent With NFL's New Orleans Saints

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman All-America kick returner/defensive back Lawrence Woods has been signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

Woods was named a Division II All-American following his 2018 season in which he was also the Great Lakes Valley Conference Special Teams Player of the Year. That season, Woods returned three kickoffs for touchdowns and averaged 50.8 yards per return.

He played only four games in 2019 but added another 87-yard TD return in the season opener against Drake (Iowa) while adding a pair of interceptions and eight pass breakups.

Woods did not suit up for the Bulldogs this spring season opting to focus on an NFL deal.

Offensive lineman Pat Murray was the last Truman player to sign a contract with an NFL team as he saw action in camps with the Green Bay Packers (2007), Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos (2008) and Cleveland Browns (2009).

The last Bulldog drafted by an NFL team was Chris Hegg at quarterback in 1986 in the 11th round (280th pick) by the Atlanta Falcons.
