KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Basketball team returned home Thursday night and overcame a challenge from longtime rival Quincy 93-86 in a game that included 11 lead changes and 10 ties. Cade McKnight led all scorers with 25 points, while Elijah Hazekamp recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hunter Strait had his second 20+ point game of the season with 21 and tied Masen Miller for the team lead with three assists. Miller and Dylan Peeters also reached double figures with ten points each.
Quincy scored the first four points of the game, but from there Truman went on a 12-2 run to go up by six points. Eric Northweather started the run with a layup, he and McKnight each scored twice in the run. From there, both teams heated up from the floor in what was mostly a very evenly played half. With 8:08 to go, the score was tied at 23. Northweather drove in from the three point line and took it himself for a dunk to put Truman back ahead, though it was short lived as Quincy hit a three to go up one. Hazekamp answered with a layup to put Truman back up, and the Bulldogs would not trail again. After a three pointer by Miller with 3:08 to go, Truman led by nine points. Quincy answered with eight straight, but two baskets by Truman made it a five point game before Quincy hit a three to close the half and send it to the locker room a 41-39 game in Truman's favor.
The first part of the second half was a seesawing affair, with the teams giving and taking the lead back on nearly a possession by possession basis. With 10:57 to go, the game was tied at 60. From there, Truman began to take control of the game. McKnight converted on a three point play to put Truman back in the lead, and from there Truman would not trail again. Nonetheless, it would not be an easy half. With 3:20 to go, Hazekamp put Truman up nine with a three pointer, but from there Quincy hung around and with 1:19 left it was still anyone's game at 86-82. Strait made three of four foul shots on Truman's next two possessions to make it a seven point game and then Hazekamp hit two free throws as the series of fouls and free throws began. But Truman iced the game from the line, hitting 22-27 foul shots in the second half to secure the seven point win.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this Saturday as Illinois Springfield comes to Pershing Arena for a 3:15 tip off.
