KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Freshman Avery Bohnenstiehl scored her first collegiate goal with 1:40 seconds left to play to give the Truman State Women's Soccer team the 1-0 victory over Davenport (Mich.) on Sunday afternoon.
The goal came after Davenport's Sarah Possett nearly scored a minute earlier as her shot lofted toward the goal and Beth Hopwood punched it just enough for it to bank off the crossbar. On the ensuing attack by the Bulldogs, a throw in was awarded deep in the Panther end of the field. The ball was tossed into the 18-yard box where it deflected off some players before Emmie McConnell was able to find Bohnenstiehl to her left. The freshman placed the winner into the top right corner.
The second half had scoring opportunities on both sides. McConnell missed an empty right side with a show wide with 31 minutes left to play and Olivia Morris tried to find the top portion of the net before Davenport keeper Gabriana Bennecke reached up to knock it over the bar. Later, Haley Diekevers took a free kick off a foul that was gobbled up by Hopwood.
Hopwood made all eight saves for the shutout.
Truman gets win number one on the season (1-0-1) and will play Upper Iowa in a non-conference tilt on Friday afternoon at home.
